It can be challenging to find holidays for children with neuro-diversity and mental health challenges. But, there is something magically healing about being in the mountains in a group setting where you are totally accepted and seen for who you are!
I often get enquiries from concerned parents about bringing their 'challenging' children on a group holiday. At La Source Holidays we welcome these children!
In our experience, it is the sensitive and gifted children who are labelled neuro-diverse or ADHD or ASD or who suffer from mental health challenges. Labels can be helpful in helping us to understand our patterns and that we are not alone, but they can hinder too. A positive framing of neurodiversity and mental health issues can make a huge difference to how one sees oneself. At La Source we see those who don't fit neatly in to the norm as the ones born to shape the world rather than fit it with it!
We have had so many children with neuro-diversity and mental health issues who have come on our trips and without exception, their parents have been amazed by how their children thrive on the trip and beyond. The educational system and our culture is not geared up for these wise beings who innately understand that things are not right and who don't fit into a materialist (or religious) educational system or within cultural expectations.
Often the sensitive ones carry family, ancestral or societal trauma that play out in unexpected ways. The behaviour can be so challenging, especially for parents who usually bear the brunt. Being in nature, being in their bodies and being engaged in play within a nurturing and safe extended group family setting allows for a natural and gentle process of unfolding for the children and a nurturing space for the parents to unwind and just 'be'.
There is an African Proverb that says "It takes a village to raise a child'. La Source trips create a Family Village environment in which everyone looks out for everyone else. There is place for play, space for silliness, room for reflection, and long walks for deep seeing and listening. Come and join the fun!
